Lára
Stefánsdóttir

Lára Stefánsdóttir is an acclaimed Icelandic choreographer, dancer, and director. She was a dancer with the Iceland Dance Company from 1980 to 2004 and later served as Director of the National Ballet School of Iceland and Artistic Director of the Iceland Dance Company.

Lára holds a Master’s degree in Choreography from Middlesex University, London, and is a certified Classical Authentic Pilates instructor. She has received numerous awards for her work, including two Gríman Awards in 2004 for her piece Luna – Best Dance Production and Best Choreography.

Since 2014, Lára has worked independently as a freelance artist and director of the dance-theatre platform Pars pro toto. Her works have been performed internationally, from Europe to Asia, Africa, and the USA.

Recent highlights include the operas *Ljós í ljóði* and *Regin Smiður*, the duet *Hannah Felicia* for SPINN Dance Company in Gothenburg, and her solo *Red Waves* performed in Bulgaria. Her dance work Black Birds premiered in Reykjavík in 2024, receiving high praise from audiences and critics a piece created for Lára Þ an autistic artist.  

Lára has regularly led international workshops and artistic projects, often with a focus on youth and the participation of people with diverse abilities. She took part in the Creative Europe project with SPINN Dance Company, where she developed choreographic methods for dancers with disabilities.
